It is getting chilly outside and getting cozy by the fire has never sounded better! Lucky for you we have put together a list of activities you can enjoy indoors to escape Connecticut winter weather for a few hours.
Let’s go Huskies! Cheer on UConn Men’s and Women’s Basketball at the XL Center. With both weeknight and weekend game times you can fit a game into your schedule. If hockey is your sport of choice you can attend a number of Hartford Wolf Pack games this winter! Every Friday night game features $2 beers and $1 hot dogs. Bring your friends and family for an action packed evening. Looking for more? Plan for a pregame meal at Vaughan’s Irish Public House on Pratt Street. The atmosphere is warm and inviting and comfort food is abundant. To top it off, order a glass of the best Guinness in CT.
Escape the bitter winds of winter and transport yourself into another world through art. Hartford has a number of worthwhile art exhibits and venues. Check them out for yourself!
Hartford Stage: Mentally escape to a high-end resort in Mexico and witness two worlds collide, igniting a series of misunderstandings, miscalculations, and internal reckonings. Told entirely in English and Spanish, Espejos: Clean is a must see!
Wadsworth Atheneum: The Wadsworth Athenuem's European art collection is extensive for its size. Composed of approximately 900 paintings, 500 sculptures, and 3,500 works on paper, created between the medieval and the modern period. Wander the galleries to view works from Salvador Dalí, Claude Monet, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The curation doesn't stop there! Be sure to check out their gift shop for beautiful items you won’t find elsewhere. Hint Hint - Valentine's Day is around the corner!
Connecticut Science Center: Located in downtown Hartford, the Connecticut Science Center is a perfect place to spend a day. Kid-friendly and interactive, the 165 exhibits will be sure to grab your attention and maybe teach you a thing or two. The Forest of Illusions traveling exhibit will be on display through February 12th. Tour through mind-bending optical illusions, immerse yourself in a human sized kaleidoscope, and experience light and color in ways you’ve never seen before.
Harriet Beecher Stowe Center: Harriet Beecher Stowe published more than 30 books, but it was her best-selling anti-slavery novel Uncle Tom’s Cabin that catapulted her to international celebrity and secured her place in history. Tour her beautifully preserved Victorian Gothic cottage, now a National Historic Landmark, where she resided for 23 years.
Mark Twain House & Museum: Next door to Harriet Beecher Stowe lived Mark Twain. Purchase tickets in advance to tour the beautifully restored Hartford home. Twain lived in this home for 17 years and wrote his most important works during these years including Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Learn more about him and the home on their daily guided tours.
